Sorry for the lack of posts – my health has been on the wrong side of average far more often than I would like lately…
I was just having a nose around online, and came across a jokey little post about why there should be a big, hyped-up awards ceremony for books, like there are for films and music (The Oscars, the Academy Awards, etc.). I mean, of course, there are prestigious awards such as the Booker, Orange shortlist, etc., but none which actually focus on the characters and storylines instead of the authors. Don’t get me wrong – there can never be enough credit for the authors! – but I found the idea of an awards ceremony for our favourite books, characters, etc. really quite charming.
So, I’ve posted each category they came up with, along with a couple of others I came up with myself. I’d be really interested to hear your own ideas – feel free to post on your own blog, or propose ideas in the comments section below. No restrictions – feel free to include graphic novels, foreign literature, whatever you like!
Best Male Character
Winston Smith, from 1984 – George Orwell
Atticus Finch, from To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee
Albus Dumbledore, from the Harry Potter series – J.K. Rowling

Lisbeth Salander, from the Millennium trilogy – Stieg Larsson
Best Antagonist and/or Villain
Patrick Bateman, from American Psycho – Bret Easton Ellis
Randall Flagg, from various novels – Stephen King
The Cheshire Cat, from Alice in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll
Tom Ripley, from The Talented Mr Ripley – Patricia Highsmith
Hannibal Lecter, from various books – Thomas Harris

I hope your health is on the upswing soon!

Love it! 😀 I never thought as Ramsey Snow in GoT for my villain list, but he’s an excellent choice – pure evil! The ‘Least Helpful Help’ and ‘Character We All Want To Be’ are great ideas for categories!! 😀

There, fixed it… deleted some text by mistake – it was supposed to say:
“Harry Paget Flashman, from Flashman – George Macdonald Fraser
Achmed the Mad, from the Discworld series – Terry Prachett”

What about, Best book turned into a great movie. Or worst movie made from a great book?

Most of the authors are dead though, so who’s going to collect the awards? I suppose that they could have a live overdubbed video message from a coffin, or bring the likes of Conan Doyle back to life via hologram like they did with Tupac. I’d like to see that.

Well, given that the nominees are all fictional people, you couldn’t really hand any of them an award per se… the hologram thing could work though – bringing characters to life! 🙂

Christian Bale and Matt Damon could actually fight it out for the award of Best Villain. Or what about Matt Damon and John Malkovich’s Ripley tag-teaming against Sir Anthony Hopkins and Brian Cox’s Lecter? Forget the awards, let’s get ready to rrrrrrumble! 😀

Oooh, that’s a tough question. can I go old school and say Miss Hadaly from Villiers’ Tomorrow’s Eve? She was, after all, the inspiration from my all-time favourite anime! 😀

You’ve done a great job here not only with categories but with the nominees. You obviously put a lot of thought into this and the following post, even while sick, which is quite admirable, and deserves, I think, an award all by itself (the work, that is, though you would be the nominee). I would like to suggest, though, for one in the Antagonist category: the Devil in The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. And two favorites of mine you might want to consider for Best Male Character: Inspector Montalbano from the series by Andrea Camilleri and Charlie Mortdecai from the series by Kyril Bonfiglioli.

Thanks very much, that’s a really nice thing to say! 🙂 I do love my books, and feel quite close to a lot of the characters within them. I don’t want to leave anyone out! They’re all great choices, too! 🙂

I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home

A great read. I’ll certainly be back.
